The sūtra also presents six phrases: "Non-arising arising is ineffable; arising arising is ineffable; arising non-arising is ineffable; non-arising non-arising is ineffable; arising is ineffable; non-arising is ineffable." Note: these six phrases clarify how the gate of non-arising breaks phenomena completely. If breaking conceivable afflictions, use the first four phrases; if breaking inconceivable afflictions, use the last two phrases. Why? Conceivable afflictions, though many, do not go beyond the inside and outside of the three realms. Afflictions outside the realms arise adhering to the essence, hence it says "non-arising arising"; afflictions inside the realms are branches and twigs, hence it says "arising arising." These afflictions are tangled and manifold, and all are the realm of those to be converted; for the sake of this realm, birth at ease is displayed. Since those to be converted cannot be apprehended, where could there be one who converts? Both active and passive vanish; therefore "both non-arising arising and arising arising are ineffable." If breaking conceivable understanding, such understanding, though manifold, does not go beyond the inside and outside of the realms. Understanding inside the realms only dispels fragmented [birth and death], hence it says "arising non-arising"; understanding outside the realms dispels both fragmented and transformative [birth and death], hence it says "non-arising non-arising." Because this understanding has depths and shallows, there are various causes and effects in one's own practice. The principle is not even one; how could there be varieties? Now, spitting upon and breaking them completely, it says "arising non-arising is ineffable, and non-arising non-arising is also ineffable."
