Non-sequential also has three meanings: phenomena, cultivation, and arising. Arising is indeterminate; the bodhisattva realm may arise first and the aggregates and sense fields later. Although not sequential, the tally of ten is fully complete. Cultivation means: if the four great elements are in conflict, one cultivates [the contemplation of] illness first; if the four modes increase, one cultivates [the contemplation of] afflictions first. In this way, one cultivates whatever is predominant first. Phenomena means: the eyes, ears, nose, tongue, aggregates, sense fields, realms, and so forth are all gates of serenity and are themselves the dharmadhātu; why should one abandon this to take up that? This is drawn from the Ratnakāraṇḍa-sūtra, and so forth. One should know that outside the dharmadhātu, there are no other phenomena whatsoever to constitute a sequence.
