If you imagine the mind to be unborn, nonexistence is non-arising. What sort of non-arising is yours? Is it non-arising of views? Non-arising of desires? Non-arising of habit-energies? Non-arising of [delusions like] dust and sand? Non-arising of avidyā? Non-arising of karma? Non-arising of retribution? Non-arising of practice? Or non-arising of principle? Worldly people say 'unborn', and that what is unborn is the Buddha; but they only speak of the Dharma-Buddha. Now, interpreting this phrase, it comprises the three Buddhas: non-arising of principle is the Dharma-Buddha; non-arising of avidyā is the Reward-Buddha; non-arising of dust and sand, views, and desires is the Response-Buddha. Again, non-arising of avidyā is the Dharma-Buddha; non-arising of views and desires is the Reward-Buddha; non-arising of dust and sand is the Response-Buddha. Again, non-arising of stages of karmic action is the Response-Buddha; non-arising of wisdom-karma is the Reward-Buddha; non-arising of principle is the Dharma-Buddha. Moreover, the Response-Buddha arises from the conditional cause; the Reward-Buddha arises from the revealing cause; the Dharma-Buddha arises from the direct cause. The arising of the three Buddhas is precisely non-arising; non-arising is precisely the arising of the three Buddhas.
