"Initial four propositions" means: both ordinary persons and sages commonly discourse in terms of four propositions; this meaning can be understood. "Infinite four propositions" means: the fours multiplied upon fours billow boundlessly without limit, as shown in their aspects across the forty-eight variations (and so forth). "Determining ranks four propositions" means: the delimiting four propositions, precisely determining right and wrong—such as the simple, compound, and complete [four views]—which, if clung to without disappearance, are the four propositions of ordinary persons; whereas taking propositionlessness as the purport of a proposition constitutes the four propositions of sages. "Layering four propositions" means: taking the four propositions of ordinary persons and layering them as the proposition of existence; layering those of the two vehicles as the proposition of non-existence; layering those of bodhisattvas as the proposition of both existence and non-existence; and layering those of the Buddha as the proposition of neither existence nor non-existence. "Attaining awakening four propositions" means: whatever proposition provides entry becomes a gate to awakening; the four propositions thus become four gates. "Subsumption four propositions" means: according to which dharma is awakened to through these gates of propositions, distinguishing them by dharma so that they pertain to the various dharma-gates. "Expedient and real four propositions" means: among the gates of the four propositions of all dharmas, three fours are expedient and one four is real. "Opening and revealing four propositions" means: opening all four propositions so that they all enter the one real four propositions. If they enter the real four propositions, all are ineffable. The four propositions of the Buddha's teaching are on this level. "Missing the intent four propositions" means: grasping at the Buddha's four propositions and thereby giving rise to dispute, whose error is identical to that of ordinary persons. "Grasping the intent four propositions" means: the bodhisattvas, seeing the error of missing the intent, composed the Hinayāna and Mahāyāna treatises to elucidate the Buddha's two sets of four propositions, refuting attachment and dispelling confusion; then there are the four propositions of grasping the intent, whereupon the function of composing treatises ceases.
