If simple views arise, use the four propositions of calming and contemplation to pursue their essence and refute them. If one avoids the simple and enters the compound, avoids the compound and enters the complete, or avoids the complete and enters the ineffable, arising erratically without aim, calming and contemplation pursues them, reaching everywhere no matter how far, ever tranquil and ever illuminating, remedying them without rest. Like a vajra blade, whatever it aims at is severed, setting realization as the goal. If one can contemplate in this way, even if one does not manifest the true, the various views will be subdued, constituting the five aggregates of skillful means. If one succeeds in entering emptiness, the myriad views will be completely extinguished. Therefore, what is refuted by the first fruit is like draining forty li of water; the effort is immense. For fear that listeners might harbor doubt, it is [said that he] briefly severs three fetters, with the remaining residue unexhausted like a single drop of water. Although [delusions of] thought are not yet exhausted, views are already without remainder. Speaking in terms of the majority, one may also clarify that the refutation of phenomena is pervasive.
