In terms of the general label "illness": the aggregates, realms, and sense-bases are the root of illness; defilements, views, pride, and so forth are the illness of defilement. The Vimalakīrti-nirdeśa says: "My present illness arises entirely from the delusions and various defilements of previous lives." Karma is also an illness. The Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra says: "The king is now gravely ill," which refers to the five deadly sins as an illness. Māra can cause illness: the three calamities are external adversities, while panting, joy, and pleasure are internal adversities. In dhyāna, the presence of joy and pleasure is an illness. For the two vehicles and the bodhisattva, it is the illness of emptiness, and the illness of emptiness is also empty.
