Answer: According to the Tattvasiddhi, the path of non-obstruction subdues them and the path of liberation severs them, treating only nine grades. According to the Abhidharma, there are two paths—the path of expedients and the path of superior progress—that subdue them; the path of non-obstruction severs them, and the path of liberation realizes them, realizing the state free from delusion. Many sūtras employ this, and we now temporarily follow it. If one enters contemplation from the provisionality of views, the uncontaminated mind is rapid, severing without emerging from contemplation, and grades are not discussed. The path of cultivation is relaxed; one can have expedients, skillfully cultivating and alternating between faith and Dharma, shifting and entering the grades of superior progress. If one repeatedly makes superior progress, one should know that the grades are also numerous; how could there be only nine? Speaking of nine is just speaking in terms of a broad division.
