How does one know the number and layers of views? From the single view of existence branch out the three provisionalities; from the three provisionalities branch out the four propositions; the three provisionalities make twelve propositions in total. Furthermore, from each of the four propositions arise the four siddhāntas; the twelve propositions thus make forty-eight siddhāntas. Furthermore, from each siddhānta branch out emptiness of intrinsic nature and emptiness of characteristics; the forty-eight siddhāntas thus comprise ninety-six [instances of] emptiness of nature and characteristics. Each proposition possesses calming and contemplation, making one hundred and ninety-two propositions of calming and contemplation. Adding the root [points] mentioned before, there are three hundred and forty-eight propositions in total. This applies to practitioners who follow through faith; it is likewise for practitioners who follow through Dharma. It is likewise when faith-followers turn into Dharma-followers, and likewise when Dharma-followers turn into faith-followers. Taken together across the four types of practitioners, there are one thousand three hundred and ninety-two propositions. This is how it is regarding the single view of existence; it is likewise for the view of nonexistence, likewise for the view of both existence and nonexistence, and likewise for the view of neither existence nor nonexistence. Across the four views, there are five thousand five hundred and sixty-eight propositions. As it is with the simple four views, so it is with the compound four views, and so it is with the complete four views. Across the three kinds of four views, there are sixteen thousand seven hundred and four ineffable views in total. As with the initial view of existence, which alone had one thousand three hundred and ninety-two propositions, there are altogether eighteen thousand ninety-six propositions. Such is the case for what is refuted; it is likewise for what refutes. Considering both what is refuted and what refutes together, there are thirty-six thousand one hundred and ninety-two propositions. As it is for one's own practice, so it is for converting others; one's own practice and converting others together make seventy-two thousand three hundred and eighty-four propositions. If one further treats the three provisionalities, four propositions, and so forth in terms of the sixty-two views and eighty-eight proclivities, they are limitless, boundless, and inexhaustible.
