Because practitioners of the two vehicles enter directly, they do not make distinctions; the bodhisattva, when first breaking the provisionality of thoughts, has already created expedients and first understood it generally. Now, emerging into the provisional, he cultivates contemplation to assist in opening the Dharma-eye, using calming and contemplation in common as the portal for knowing the provisional. Specific cultivations each have their methods: stilling all conditioned thoughts is called 'calming'; conditioning upon this provisionality of thoughts is called 'contemplation'. Through the original vow of great compassion, the power of great vigor, and the empowered aid of all Buddhas, he suddenly awakens and understands, obtaining the sight of the Dharma-eye and the knowing of the knowledge of the paths, clearly distinguishing the characteristics of the sickness of the provisionality of thoughts, and so forth.
