The Treatise says: 'Why confer the mundane gift of Dharma? For instance, it is like a prince falling from a high place: the king, his father, out of loving affection, piles up silk and cotton on the ground to catch him, sparing him pain. Sentient beings are also like this: they are destined to fall into the three miserable paths, but the holy one pities them and uses mundane wholesome dharmas as a provisional expedient to catch and guide them, sparing them the evil destinies.' However, regarding the dispensing of Dharma-medicines, ordinary foolish people originally do not know it themselves; it is entirely due to holy ones leaving traces and assimilating with ordinary beings, appearing in Buddha-less eras to guide and instruct the immature. The Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra says: 'All mundane tīrthika scriptures are taught by the Buddha, not by tīrthikas.' The Suvarṇaprabhāsa Sūtra says: 'All good treatises in the world originate from this sūtra.' If one deeply recognizes mundane dharmas, they are just the Buddhadharma. Why is this? Summarizing the ten wholesome actions yields the five precepts; deeply understanding the five constants and the five phases, their meanings also resemble the five precepts. Humaneness, compassion, caring, and nurturing without harming others is the precept against killing; righteousness, yielding, and modest restraint, giving of oneself to benefit others, is the precept against stealing; ritual propriety, regulation, and tying the hair to wed is the precept against sexual misconduct; clear and sharp wisdom, acting with uprightness and according with reason, is the precept against drinking alcohol; trustworthiness, keeping faith with truth, and honest devotion without deception is the precept against lying. The Duke of Zhou and Confucius established these five constants as mundane Dharma-medicines to treat human sicknesses. Furthermore, the five phases resemble the five precepts: not killing guards against wood; not stealing guards against metal; not engaging in misconduct guards against water; not lying guards against earth; not drinking alcohol guards against fire. Moreover, the Five Classics resemble the five precepts: the Rites expounds moderation, guarding against drinking alcohol; the Music harmonizes the mind, guarding against misconduct; the Odes uses satirical critique, guarding against killing; the Documents expounds righteousness and yielding, guarding against stealing; the Changes discerns yin and yang, guarding against lying.
