Furthermore, as in various sūtras, sometimes a single path is taken as the medicine, such as the samādhi of one practice. As when the Buddha told a bhikṣu: 'Do not grasp what belongs to others; all dharmas belong to others. Becoming an arhat through non-reception of all dharmas.' As explained before, the simple and compound views are all not received. Sometimes two paths are taken as the medicine, with samādhi loved and wisdom urged on, both wheels being equal; sometimes three dharmas are taken as the medicine, namely discipline, samādhi, and wisdom; sometimes four dharmas are taken as the medicine, namely the four smṛtyupasthānas; sometimes five dharmas are taken as the medicine, namely the five powers; sometimes six dharmas, namely the six mindfulnesses; the seven factors of awakening, the eightfold noble path, the nine contemplations, the ten knowledges—such increasing numbers explain the path, up to eighty-four thousand, which cannot be numbered. Or there are numerous single dharmas, even limitless single dharmas, ineffable single dharmas; or numerous sets of ten dharmas, limitless sets of ten dharmas, ineffable sets of ten dharmas. Each and every one of these dharmas has various names, various characteristics, and various remedies; the bodhisattva emerging into the provisional must recognize and know them all. For the sake of sentient beings, he gathers a host of Dharma-medicines, like a guide across the ocean. If he does not know them, he cannot benefit beings. Wishing to know them, with single-mindedness he comprehensively cultivates calming and contemplation, the vow of great compassion, and the power of vigor; through the empowered aid of the Buddhas, the Dharma-eye opens, and he can understand them all clearly, like looking at a fruit in the palm of his hand.
