When this contemplation is accomplished, it is called the initial rank of rejoicing in accordance [with the Dharma]; when aided by reading and reciting, this contemplation becomes increasingly clear, fulfilling the second rank; when expounded according to practice, it nourishes the mind to become ever more luminous, fulfilling the third rank; when practiced alongside the six perfections, the merit becomes increasingly deep, fulfilling the fourth rank; when fully practicing the six perfections, phenomena and principle without deficiency, this fulfills the fifth rank. From the fifth rank, one advances into the purification of the six sense faculties, which is termed the 'stage of resemblance.' Therefore, the Lotus Sūtra says: 'Although they have not yet attained the undefiled state, their mental faculty is purified like this.' Progressing from the stage of resemblance, one enters the copper wheel, destroys ignorance, and attains the forty-two stages of the endurance of the non-arising of dharmas. Therefore, the Lotus Sūtra says: 'They attain such an undefiled, pure retribution.' It is also said: 'The three [stages of] worthies and ten [stages of] sages dwell in retribution; only the Buddha alone resides in the pure land.' Taking the worthies and sages as parallel to the Buddha, this points to wondrous awakening as retribution.
