Ignorance is of two kinds: first, delusion regarding principle; second, delusion regarding phenomena. Which of these is the cognitive hindrance? The Bodhisattvabhūmi states: 'The undefiled "wisdom of personal selflessness" of the two vehicles is the pure wisdom counteracting the affliction hindrance; the "wisdom of phenomenal selflessness" of buddhas and bodhisattvas is the pure wisdom counteracting the cognitive hindrance.' If so, both take delusion regarding principle as the cognitive hindrance. Furthermore, when an obstruction to wisdom's knowables is called a cognitive hindrance, knowing all dharmas without impediment means knowing without impediment amidst phenomena; thus it is solely delusion regarding phenomena that is the cognitive hindrance.
