6.89

二、憶本誓願者：本發弘誓，拔苦與樂，令得安隱。今眾生苦多，未能得度，我若獨免，辜違先心。不忘本懷，豈捨含識？入假同事而引導之。二乘初業不愚於法，亦有大願；隔生中忘，退大取小，眾聖所呵。菩薩不爾，如母得食常憶其兒。

Second, mindfulness of original vows: originally one made vast vows to pull out suffering, bestow joy, and make [sentient beings] attain peace. Now sentient beings have abundant suffering and have not yet been saved; if I alone escape, I would violate my original mind. Not forgetting one's original intention, how could one abandon sentient beings? One enters the provisional to share their tasks and guide them. The two vehicles in their initial practice are not foolish regarding dharmas, and they too have great vows; but separated by lives they forget them along the way, retreating from the Great to grasp the Small, and are rebuked by all the noble ones. The bodhisattva is not like this: like a mother who obtains food and always remembers her child.
