How does one know the root of views? The view of self is the root of all views; a single thought-moment of deluded mind is the root of the view of self. From this deluded mind arise immeasurable views, crisscrossing and dense beyond calculation. Because of these views, one creates all kinds of binding karma, falling into the three evil destinies and sinking in cyclical rebirth without end. It is like a whirling firebrand: if one wishes to extinguish it, one should stop the hand. One knows that the mind is without mind, yet due to false thinking the mind arises; one also knows that the self is without self, yet due to inversion the self is born. When inversion and false thinking cease, that is the cessation of the root, and the branches will naturally fall away.
