How does one know the causes and conditions for the arising of views? Because causes and conditions differ, the views born are also different. How is this known? It is known from internal and external signs. As for internal and external signs: the dwellings of sentient beings differ, the seasons are cold or hot, the lands are high or low, childbearing is delicate or coarse, food is rich or plain; because places differ, the retributions differ. Though according to local customs, hoarding and scattering are lavish or meager, presence or absence, gain or loss, poverty or wealth, hunger or repletion, and so on. Bodily forms differ: short or tall, handsome or ugly, robust or emaciated, healthy or sick, and so on. Faculties and dispositions of liking and loathing differ: scorning glory and abandoning high rank, taking pleasure in woodcutting and fishing; tapping on an ox's horn to seek ministership, carrying a cauldron to court an appointment; specializing in the civil or the military; indulging in alcohol and savoring flavors; having much greed or much extravagance; having much anger or much joy; having much folly or much cunning; thus differing in hundreds of thousands of myriad kinds. Setting aside merely the human realm where each is distinct, how much more so for other species, which cannot be recounted! From such diverse differences in environment and person, one definitely knows that karma differs; because karma differs, the arising of views differs. Therefore, seeing the branches one knows the root, and seeing the external one recognizes the internal.
