Furthermore, one should contemplate: for immeasurable eons, mostly based on name-and-form and perception and formations, one has reckoned a self and a person. If one clings and acts, suddenly hearing praise or censure, one says: '[They] praise or censure me'; standing, walking, staying, sitting, lying down, in all affairs one reckons a self. It is like glue coating the hand: whatever it grasps, it adheres to. A sūtra says: 'For an ordinary person to be free of the mind of self is impossible.' If one encounters poverty and loses one's original mind, one also reckons a self ceaselessly; if one attains wealth and nobility, indulging power and venting poison, cruelly harming the world, ablaze with towering wrath, wronging the innocent. All the karmas arising are done by me—who will take my place? Holding fire against the wind, will it not burn the hand? It is like that night room where one claimed there was a ghost; when daylight illuminates it clearly, it is merely an old acquaintance.
