That there are four kinds within this single Dharma-gate is like a king's secret words, where a wise minister understands the intention. The Buddha taught the ten powers to respond to four kinds of capacities: not letting the lesser disparage the great and harm their merit; not letting the great grasp the lesser and suppress their wholesome roots. Each hearing privately, each obtains benefit, without deliberate contrivance or calculated skill, and thus he is called the "Benevolent One" (Śākyamuni). Bodhisattvas, as wise ministers, deeply understand the secret words: knowing the intention lies in the Tripiṭaka [teaching], they ask about origination and cessation, inquiring earnestly so that those with conditions may swiftly awaken; so too, knowing the intention lies in the perfect [teaching], they either praise the unconditioned or inquire about the unconditioned to cause others to gain understanding. A single voice singing diversely pleases myriad listeners; the verbal secret is boundless, and its meanings inexhaustible. Why should making the four interpretations above give rise to any doubt?
