The Amitāyurdhyāna-sūtra states: "Amitābha Buddha has eighty-four thousand marks, and each mark has eighty-four thousand secondary characteristics." Both the Satyaka-nirgrantha-sūtra and the Avataṃsaka-sūtra state: "The marks are the great ocean of marks; the secondary characteristics are the small ocean of marks." Since they are called an ocean of marks, how could they be confined to thirty-two? Due to differing conditions, abundance or scarcity depends on the recipient. These real marks are subsumed by the two kinds of the factors of the path belonging to the distinctive and the perfect; the meaning can be understood on its own, so it cannot be recorded in detail. One should know that the auxiliary path of the six perfections subsumes all wholesome dharmas, boundless and limitless. By citing the twelve items above to indicate the outlines of the meaning, one knows that the rest are also subsumed. If this is true of the auxiliary path, how much more so of the primary path (and so on)!
