First, knowing the ten minds of going with and against the stream and binding one's focus to true reality is the primary repentance. One should constantly repent; there is no time when one is not repenting. However, the principle and reason are subtle and profound, whereas the function of contemplation is light and coarse, and dark, evil veils and obstacles are difficult to quickly illuminate and understand. Therefore, one additionally deploys body and speech to help stimulate mental karma, making it swiftly correspond; hence, the five repentances are added. 'Repentance' (chan) means confessing and exposing past evil; 'remorse' (hui) means reforming past errors and cultivating future goodness. The Buddha's wisdom shines everywhere, and the Buddha's compassion universally gathers all. With body and speech, I cast myself down at the Buddha's feet: May the Eye of the World bear witness to my repentance! From beginningless time, I have committed immeasurable transgressions that obstruct the Buddha's path; pressed by ignorance, I did not recognize the correct and true. Bound by the three realms, I activated body, speech, and mind, and gave rise to the sins of the ten unwholesome deeds. Toward the Three Jewels, the six kinds of kin, the four modes of birth, and the five destinies, I did harmful deeds; I broke those who had generated the aspiration for the three vehicles; I committed the five and seven heinous sins; I committed them myself, taught others to do them, and rejoiced upon seeing them done. In the present life or future rebirths, I must suffer all manner of bitter afflictions. Just as the bodhisattvas of the three times repented when seeking the Buddha's path, I too do likewise! Grieving that I have been mired in torpor and lack the eye of wisdom! Giving voice to these words, weeping copiously with voice and tears, utterly sincere and true, throwing all five limbs to the ground; like a great tree collapsing, shattering the notions of self and other, overturning and annihilating all evils—this is called 'repentance and remorse.'
