If so, the stages of the five ranks precede the ten faiths. If one relies on the Universal Worthy Contemplation Sūtra, it takes the five ranks as the five minds of the ten faiths. However, the Buddha's intent is difficult to fathom, preaching differently to suit different capacities; we borrow this to open up understanding, so why toil in bitter disputes? Furthermore, this present chapter concerns the realm of contemplating the aggregates, realms, and entrances; one must determine the stages and ranks with reference to the aggregates and entrances. That is to say: the black aggregates, entrances, and realms are the stage of the three evil destinies; the white aggregates, entrances, and realms are the stage of the three wholesome destinies; the good-expedient aggregates, entrances, and realms are the stage of resemblance of the Hinayana; the undefiled aggregates, realms, and entrances are the true stage of the two vehicles; the transformation aggregates, realms, and entrances are the stage of the five kinds of persons; the aggregates, realms, and entrances of eternal form, eternal feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness of dharmatā are the stage of the Buddha (and so forth).
