Although free of emptiness and the provisional, it illuminates both emptiness and the provisional: illuminating conditioned coarse form is called the 'flesh eye'; illuminating conditioned subtle form is called the 'divine eye'; illuminating the emptiness of conditioned form is called the 'wisdom eye'; illuminating the provisional nature of conditioned form is called the 'Dharma eye'; illuminating the middle nature of conditioned form is called the 'Buddha eye'. That the five eyes are complete in a single mind does not mean possessing the ordinary person's flesh eye of pus and blood, nor the divine eye attained by the devas, nor the wisdom eye of the two vehicles sunken in emptiness, nor the discriminating eye of the bodhisattvas; it is simply that the Buddha eye possesses the five powers, just as many rivers flowing into the ocean lose their original names. Thus the Buddha asked Subhūti: 'Does the Tathāgata possess the five eyes?' He answered: 'He does.' All are named as possessed by the Tathāgata; what do they have to do with the eyes of ordinary people or the two vehicles? The Qing Guanyin jing says: 'Being fully endowed with the five eyes, one attains bodhi.' Because the three contemplations are in a single mind, it is called 'non-deficient cultivation'; because a single eye possesses the five powers, it is called 'clearly seeing the gate of ingress', and is also the perfect realization. One attains mastery within and without the eye: entering correct absorption through the eye, the samādhi of the nose arises; entering through the nose, the eye arises. Although active, it is quiescent, and quiescence does not obstruct action; although quiescent, it is active, and action does not obstruct quiescence. Although seeing, there is no seeing; non-seeing yet seeing—only this is called 'clearly seeing the gate of ingress'.
