The precepts of noumenal contemplation are fully present in the mind itself; yet though one has this understanding, one's bodily and vocal actions often fall short. Either one is coarse and rough in this life, or the obstacles of past lives have not yet been repented, obscuring my samādhi so that the doors of liberation do not open. Having reflected on these matters, one should feel deep self-pity and make a profound reform: from this day forward, cutting off the mind of continuity, vowing to hold the prohibitive precepts without phenomenal blemish, guarding and cherishing them as if preserving a life-buoy, never preserving the whole body at the expense of harming the precepts. The poisonous dragon surrendered its skin to save ants; King Sudāsa lost his kingdom to obtain a verse. Upholding the precepts oneself and transforming others, praising the Dharma and praising those who practice it, with an immovable great vow, one invokes the names of the Buddhas as witnesses and saviours. With a sincere mind, one moves the Buddha to emit the light of pure precepts; when those who have broken the prohibitions are touched by the light of pure precepts, their sins of both lives are extinguished, and they immediately accord with the right action of noumenal contemplation, which must be explained one by one. Phenomenal practice and noumenal contemplation being perfected, one ultimately upholds the precepts, enters the three doors of liberation, and sees the Buddha-nature. This is called 'assisting with oil to increase the light of the path.'
