If one practices as above, one should attain awakening; if one does not awaken, one should reflect: the path-factors of noumenal contemplation include right action, right speech, and right livelihood. These are subsumed under śīla. In the Tripiṭaka teaching, right action and the others consist of scrupulously guarding deportment, being unbroken, unfaulted, unpierced, and unmixed. In the shared teaching, right action and the others do not apprehend body or speech; they are the true in the very midst of phenomena, being the precepts that accord with the path, unattached, and so on. In the distinctive teaching, right action and the others are the precepts praised by the wise, masterly, and so on. In the perfect teaching, right action and the others all contemplate the dharmatā, being complete precepts and so on. The Vimalakīrtinirdeśa says: 'One who can do so is said to observe the Vinaya.' This is what it means.
