Furthermore, one should know: the four elements compose the body, two ascending and two descending, in opposition to one another. Earth blocks water, water rots earth; wind scatters earth, earth obstructs wind; water extinguishes fire, fire boils water, constantly harming one another. It is like a box holding four vipers, or an ulcerous boil pierced by an arrow; it is inherently and constantly suffering, so what pleasure can there be? Added to this are hunger, thirst, cold, heat, whipping, binding, birth, old age, sickness, and death—this is the suffering of suffering. The four elements assailing each other and mutually destroying—this is the suffering of change. Flowing and blazing thought-moment after thought-moment—this is the suffering of conditioned existence. Projecting notions of pleasure onto underlying suffering—if one sees the marks of suffering clearly, like a thorn in a sore constantly causing sharp pain, one will not give rise to a single thought-moment of the inversion of pleasure regarding this body.
