Fifth, cultivating calming and contemplation, following the previous model into ten points (and so forth). First, to differentiate the conceivable: based on the causes and conditions of illness, the ten dharmadhātus arise. For instance, because of illness, one retreats and loses one's original aspiration, abandons and neglects dhyāna-meditation, and slanders the Three Jewels; not reflecting that past transgressions brought about this misfortune, one says that cultivating good yields no merit, giving rise to great wrong views. Furthermore, cherishing the body and preserving life, one indulges in fish, meat, pungent roots, and liquor at improper times and without limit. Or, once the illness is cured and the body strong, one gives free rein to passions in the five desires. The wholesome mind is completely exhausted, and unwholesome karma blazes, giving rise to upper, middle, and lower transgressions. This is creating the three unwholesome dharmadhātus due to illness.
