All sentient beings possess this principle yet cannot recognize it; drifting along the flow of views and thoughts, they sink into the ocean of fragmented [birth and death]. A bodhisattva gives rise to deep compassion, wishing to bestow upon them the joy of the path and cessation—which are non-existent and identical with emptiness. This is an ill bodhisattva capable of subduing their own mind through the contemplation of emptiness. Because the mind is subdued, the actual illness is cured. Out of loving-kindness and compassion, an expedient illness then arises: being born into the realm of fragmented [birth and death], the bodhisattva regards people of fragmented [birth and death] as their only child. Since the child is ill, the parents are also ill; thus, by means of their own physical illness, they console and comfort them. If the child's illness is cured, the parents are also cured. This is called "consoling and comforting the ill bodhisattva by means of [the contemplation of] emptiness through embodiment or analysis."
