Furthermore, one contemplates that although this illness is identical with the dharmadhātu, sentient beings do not identify with the middle way. This principle having not yet been revealed, they drift along the flow of avidyā and sink into the ocean of transformational [birth and death]. A sūtra states: "The three worthies and ten sages dwell in retribution." This is the illness of the causes and fruits of real retribution. For this reason, [the bodhisattva] gives rise to loving-kindness and compassion to uproot the suffering of avidyā and bestow ultimate joy. This is an ill bodhisattva using the contemplation of the middle way to subdue their mind. Because the mind is subdued, the actual illness is cured. Out of loving-kindness and compassion, an expedient illness then arises: being born into the land of real retribution, the bodhisattva regards the people of transformational [birth and death] as their only child. Since the child is ill, the parents are also ill; thus, by means of their own physical illness, they console and comfort their child. When the child's avidyā is cured, the parents are also cured. This is called "consoling and comforting the ill bodhisattva according to the perfect teaching."
