Such three illnesses arise within a single mind; such subduing is subdued through a single contemplation; such loving-kindness and compassion is perfect and universal loving-kindness and compassion; such manifestation is manifestation through the universal gate; such consolation and comfort is expounded with a single voice. For the sake of easy understanding, they were distinguished as above; but discussing them in truth, they are the inconceivable loving-kindness and compassion. Only that Vimalakīrti was fully endowed with such Dharmas: the three actual [illnesses] were perfectly eliminated, and the three expedient [illnesses] universally manifested. To that superior person, it was difficult to make an answering response. The actual illnesses of kings and elders were fully present, so they could not bear to accept the mission; although the two vehicles had eliminated the grasping at marks, they declined as incapable of going; bodhisattvas, having discarded adventitious defilements, were still frequently bested. Only Mañjuśrī, whose power on the path was close to his, matched his capacity and received the directive, and was thus capable. He inquired: "Householder, from what cause did this illness arise? How long has it been present? How should it be extinguished?" The householder answered: "Now my illness arises from great compassion. Because sentient beings are ill, therefore I am ill; when sentient beings are cured of their illness, therefore I will be cured."
