Since the habituation and retribution of the six perfections have six types, all wholesome dharmas are likewise. If one investigates this teaching in detail, the longer one looks, the clearer it becomes; there is no need to say much, nor can much be said. Having received oral instructions face to face, discuss it at length as you will. The masters of the Fangdeng (Vaipulya) traditions hand down the saying: 'When signs of being indebted to the Three Jewels manifest, one definitely must repay them.' Master Nanyue said: 'If one possesses goods of one's own, repaying them is good; if one possesses no goods of one's own, should one abandon the practice of the method and run around in all four directions seeking them?' There are two meanings here. How boundless are the past sins of sentient beings! Debts owed to the Three Jewels are not merely of one kind. Just as an arhat first goes straight to attain the Way before finding leisure to repay karmic debts, this is called 'repudiating debts.' If a practitioner abandons the bodhimaṇḍa to go begging, agitated for several years, how could that not be the work of Māra? For now, without repaying them yet, simply make a resolute vow to practice the true Dharma of all Buddhas and unfold my 'perfection' and 'establishment.' 'Perfection' means waiting until afflictions are broken and one enters the forbearance of the non-arising of dharmas, whereupon on the plane of the dharmakāya one makes vast offerings to all the Three Jewels and returns into saṃsāra to repay sentient beings; at that time, the bodhisattva is not called one who 'repudiates debts.' 'Establishment' means waiting until one's effort is complete and fulfilled, one's reputation and practice are established, and retributions arrive spontaneously, at which time one will repay the Three Jewels; this is not refusing to repay without any intention to repay, but merely begging for a slight extension in expectation of unfolding and establishing. How could this not be a good thing?
