As for the sign of the hindrance of stinginess: one may see the Three Jewels, teachers, monks, and parents with gaunt appearances, or naked, or in tattered clothing; or starving and distressed, with monasteries deserted and dilapidated; or see all things guarded, sealed, and locked up, differing from before. Previously people rejoiced before goods; now one sees beggars who, before goods, scold with anger. The previous objects signified articles of giving; the present objects signify articles of stinginess. Or one may see a stingy person come before oneself. These are called manifested signs of retribution effects of the hindrance of stinginess. They possess six types, which can be understood by analogy with the preceding (and so forth).
