As for signs of breaking precepts: if one sees images of the Three Jewels, teachers, monks, elders, and parents with heads severed, sinking into the ground; or their bodies broken, suffering the affliction of whipping; or sees heads severed from bodies, monasteries decaying; or sees parents scolding and the Three Jewels rebuking; or sees a butcher who loves killing come and stand before oneself; or furthermore, harmful birds and venomous insects crawling over one's body and head—these are all retribution signs of the hindrance of anger. There are also six meanings by analogy with the preceding (and so forth). If one sees impure feces and urine, corpses, and foul things blocking the road, with deep water across the path preventing one from advancing; or sees oneself consorting with former partners of lust, furthermore showing impure signs, filthy and shameful; or sees one's own body having foul places; or sees a lustful person come and talk of heedless affairs; or sees birds, beasts, and humans mating—these are all retribution signs of the sin of lust. There are also six meanings (and so forth). If one sees the place where one stole goods throughout one's life, and the owner of the stolen goods comes to scold, bind, and seize those goods; or sees a person who loves stealing come and encourage acts of stealing—these are all retribution signs of theft. The six meanings are by analogy with the preceding (and so forth). If one sees parents, teachers, monks, and outsiders engaging in wrathful, poisonous disputes, various intrigues, and slandering oneself; or sees a person of many verbal transgressions come—these are signs of retribution effects of the four verbal transgressions. Six types (and so forth). Or one sees a drunkard vomiting and lying in disarray; or sees oneself drowsy and confused—these are all signs of retribution effects of drinking alcohol. There are also six meanings. All such are signs of retribution effects of the hindrance of breaking precepts. The remaining four hindrances can be known by analogy with this, and therefore are not recorded in detail (and so forth). Furthermore, pain and suffering in the internal mind is the habituation of killing; heaviness in the internal mind is the habituation of stealing; agitation and restlessness in the internal mind is the habituation of lust; all of them present together is equal-proportion habituation.
