Second, as for the manifestation of the seasonal enchanting spirits: the Daji [jing] explains that twelve beasts in the jeweled mountain practice dharma-conditioned compassion. These are the masters of enchanting essences. Those that are provisional manifestations do not necessarily cause vexation; the real ones can disturb practitioners. If one sits in meditation with improper thoughts, one often becomes attached to seasonal spirits. They may take the forms of young boys, young girls, old men, old women, birds, or beasts, with strange shapes and uncommon appearances, of various kinds; or they delight the person, or instruct the person.
