If the gates are not opened, it is certainly due to phenomenal obstructions. Since long-distant kalpas one has been driven by māras: giving rise to māra-dāna for the sake of retribution; observing māra-śīla out of desire for gain and offerings; practicing māra-kṣānti out of fear of others; cultivating māra-vīrya seeking fame; attaining māra-dhyāna, being deluded by ghost phenomena; and delighting in māra-prajñā, discriminating the net of views. Although these six dharmas are called good, in truth they are māra. Due to these wrong obscurations, the three gates of liberation are obscured. Now one uses the correct perfections to remedy the six obscurations; when the obscurations are removed and the perfections accomplished, it is like lamp oil being plentiful and the illumination bright. If mixed with afflictions, one should use the fourfold analytical contemplation mentioned before to aid in the remedy; if mixed with karma, one borrows mindfulness of the two Buddhas to aid in the remedy.
