Penetrating and realizing in this manner is called the "unobstructed path": "All unobstructed people transcend birth and death by the single path." How do they transcend? Sometimes, penetrating and realizing that lust is ultimately pure, free of encumbrance and undefiled like empty space, they suddenly transcend birth and death; this is called "abiding in subduing and gaining benefit." Or at times, giving free rein to the mind, they contemplate the root and branch causes and conditions of this lust—how many kinds are illnesses, and how many kinds are medicines? Just as Vasumitrā entered the limit of detachment to liberate sentient beings, when cultivating this contemplation, they suddenly transcend birth and death; this is called "abiding in non-subduing and gaining benefit." Or at times, because both are negated, they gain benefit; or at times, by contemplating both, they gain benefit. In this way, skillfully adapting to when one should abide and when one should not abide, both oneself and others benefit, with nothing diminished from the bodhisattva's path, deliberating through the four siddhāntas.
