8.34

To fulfill the vow, one must establish essential practices; among essentials of practice, nothing comes before calming and contemplation. Realizing that the four components of afflictions are themselves empty is called "calming that realizes the true, entering the contemplation of emptiness." Contemplating the medicines, illnesses, and other dharmas of afflictions is called "calming that accords with conditions, entering the contemplation of the provisional." Contemplating that afflictions are identical to the true reality is called "calming that ceases the two extremes, entering the contemplation of the middle way." Skillfully settling the mind and cultivating these three calmings and three contemplations accomplishes the three eyes and three wisdoms in a single mind.
