Why is this? Even if anger arose from birth, when remonstrated and reasoned with, it subsided; but what is aroused now is roaring, violent, and terrifying. Inverted thoughts from birth arose and ceased abruptly; what is aroused now is thick, stagnant, and will not depart. Lust for form from birth could be stopped by suppression; what is aroused now does not even discriminate against a dead horse, let alone its own kind! When this delusion surges from within, it is domineering and blazing; if it meets external objects, the mind goes mad and the eyes go dark. It is like flowing water whose swiftness is not noticed, but when checked by a piece of wood, surging ripples suddenly arise. It is also like a strong man who does not know his own strength, but when provoked, his rage is mighty. When the defilements lie dormant, they seem as if present yet absent; but when repenting in the bodhimaṇḍa and contemplating the aggregates, realms, and entrances, it is like prodding a sleeping lion whose roar shakes the earth. If one does not recognise them, they can drag one into committing grave offences. Not only will calming and contemplation fail to be accomplished, but bad karma will further increase, plunging one into a dark pit with no way to escape. For this reason, one must contemplate the realm of defilement.
