Next, maladjustment in counting breaths often causes malaria-like knots and cramping of muscles and vessels. If the eight tactile sensations arise, using breath contrary to the sensations causes illness. As for the eight tactile sensations: when the mind unites with the four great elements, there are four primary tactile sensations, and further four secondary tactile sensations, making eight tactile sensations in all. Heaviness is like sinking down; lightness is like rising up; coldness is like an icehouse; heat is like a burning room; roughness is like dragging against the grain; smoothness is like rubbing grease; softness is like being without bones; coarseness is like bran on the skin. These eight tactile sensations are four upward and four downward. Inhalation accords with the earth element and is heavy; exhalation accords with the wind element and is light. Further, inhalation accords with the water element and is cold; exhalation accords with the fire element and is hot. Further, inhalation accords with the earth element and is rough; exhalation accords with the wind element and is smooth. Further, inhalation accords with the water element and is soft; exhalation accords with the fire element and is coarse. If the heavy sensation arises and one counts exhalations, it conflicts with the sensation and immediately becomes an illness; the other cases can be understood by analogy.
