Fourth, ghost illnesses: the four great elements and five viscera are not ghosts, nor are ghosts the four great elements and five viscera; yet if [ghosts] enter the four great elements and five viscera, this is called 'ghost illness.' If one says there are no ghost illnesses, heretical shamans treat entirely as ghost [afflictions] and sometimes effect a cure. If one says there are no illnesses of the four great elements, medical prescriptions treat entirely with decoctions and herbs and sometimes effect a cure. There was a king whose ghost illness was in an empty space, and [the ghost] was repeatedly killed with needles; then the ghost king himself came and dwelled upon his heart, and the acupuncturist folded his hands [in helplessness]. Therefore, know that there are indeed ghost illnesses. Ghosts also do not afflict people at random; it is truly because people have perverse thoughts about various things, or hope to know good and bad fortune, that the duohuiluo ghost produces various transformations, entering through the five sense faculties in blue-green, yellow, and other colors, whereupon the mental ground produces perverse understanding and is able to know good and bad fortune. One may know the auspicious and inauspicious affairs of an individual, a family, a village, or a state; this is not noble knowledge. If one does not treat it, over time it will kill the person.
