Fifth are illnesses caused by māras. These are not different from [those caused by] ghosts. A ghost only sickens or kills the body, whereas a māra destroys the contemplating mind, destroys the dharmakāya and the life of wisdom, generates deviant thoughts and imaginations, and robs a person of merits; in this it differs from a ghost. This also occurs because a practitioner, while seated in meditation, conceives deviant thoughts of gain and sustenance, and the māra manifests various robes, food and drink, the seven precious jewels, and sundry items; [the practitioner] immediately accepts them with delight, and this penetrates the mind to become an illness. This illness is difficult to cure; it will be explained below under treatments.
