Third, explaining the methods of treatment and how their suitability differs. If a disorder is incurred through hard physical toil or food and drink, it requires medicines, formulas, and regimen, and then it will heal. If a disorder is incurred through improper seated meditation, it requires seated meditation with proper regulation of breath and contemplation before it can heal, and medicinal decoctions are not suitable for it. If they are the two illnesses of ghosts and māras, they require the power of profound contemplation practice and great divine dhāraṇīs before they will heal. If it is a karmic illness, one must internally use the power of contemplation and externally perform repentance, and only then can it heal. The various treatments differ; one should properly grasp their meaning, and not handle knives and hold blades only to wound oneself. Now, with reference to seated meditation, six treatments are briefly indicated: first, calming; second, therapeutic vocalizations; third, breathing; fourth, provisional visualization; fifth, contemplation of the mind; sixth, recipes and techniques.
