Sixth are karmic illnesses. These may be exclusively due to past karma, or due to breaking the precepts in the present life which activates past karma. When the force of karma creates an illness, one can deduce what has been transgressed with reference to the five sense organs. If it is the karma of the sin of killing, it causes diseases of the liver and eyes; the sin and karma of drinking alcohol causes diseases of the heart and mouth; the karma of sexual misconduct causes diseases of the kidneys and ears; the karma of false speech causes diseases of the spleen and tongue; and if it is the karma of stealing, it causes diseases of the lungs and nose. The karma of breaking the five precepts brings about diseases of the five internal viscera and five sense organs, which only heal when the karma is exhausted. If one upholds the precepts in this life, this too may stir up karma to produce illness; hence it is said: "If one has heavy sin, it may be eliminated through a headache; that which should have been heavily suffered in hell is lightly compensated in the human realm." This is illness caused by karma about to be exhausted. Indeed, karmic illnesses are of many kinds, such as dropsical swelling and yellow emaciation. In all cases of illness, one must examine with care and scrutiny, know the root source of the disease, and only then apply the cure.
