Regarding its direct use to treat illness: the dantian is the sea of qì and can lock down and swallow myriad diseases. If one calms the mind in the dantian, the breath and qì are regulated and harmonious, and thus it can cure disease; this is the meaning. Another master said: "Ascending qì with fullness in the chest, pain in both flanks, tightness in the back and spine, pain at the shoulder well, distressing heat and pain in the heart, agitation preventing eating, swelling of the heart, cold below the navel, heat above and cold below, discord between yin and yang, and qì-induced cough—the above twelve diseases are all treated by calming [the mind] in the dantian." The dantian is two and a half inches below the navel. If the pain is acute, move the mind toward the zusanli point; if the pain is still not eliminated, move it to the horizontal creases on the toenails of both great toes, taking recovery as the standard.
