Furthermore, constantly calming the mind at the feet can cure all diseases. Why is this? The five consciousnesses are in the head, and the mind mostly directs its attention upward; the mind commands the wind, the wind stirs the fire, the fire melts the water, and the water moistens the body; therefore, the upper part is regulated while the lower part is disrupted, leading to various diseases, or spasms and paralysis of the legs and feet, and the like. Moreover, the five viscera are like lotus blossoms drooping downward; when consciousness mostly directs its attention upward, strong qì surges against the viscera and bowels, overturning and damaging them to cause disease. If the mind directs its attention downward, it blows the fire to descend, food and drink are locked and transformed, and the five viscera are compliant. Calming the mind at the feet is the finest cure; I constantly use it and repeatedly gain profound benefit; when using it to treat others, it has frequently proved effective. Jiang, Wu, Mao, and others are such individuals.
