First, one must recognize that breath has four companions: that with sound is called wind—attending to it leads to dispersal; that which is blocked and stagnant is called qì—attending to it leads to blockage; that which exits and enters incompletely is called panting—attending to it leads to exhaustion; that which is without sound and without stagnation, exiting and entering completely, is called breath—attending to it leads to samādhi. One should seek a quiet place, sit cross-legged, straighten the body upright, relax the physical frame, loosely stretch the four limbs, and align the bones and joints. One should ensure that the joints correspond, neither leaning nor bent. Loosen the belt, adjust oneself by shifting, place the left hand upon the right hand, with the thumbs just touching. Relax the jaws, slightly open the mouth, and exhale deeply four or five times. Next, gradually level the head, slowly close the eyes without letting the eyelids be too tight, always keeping them relaxed and hooded, and only then use the breath.
