9.118

又諸佛皆於此觀而轉法輪。若寂滅道場七處八會，為利根菩薩說十二因緣不生不滅，亦名為假名，亦名中道義；若鹿苑，為鈍根弟子說十二因緣生滅相；若《方等》十二部經，說十二因緣生滅即空、即假、即中；若《摩訶般若》，說十二因緣即空、即假、即中；若《法華》，說十二因緣即中，捨三方便也；若《涅槃》，說十二因緣具足四意，皆有佛性，如乳有醍醐性。四教五味不同，皆是約十二因緣善巧分別，隨機示導耳。又復「置毒乳中」是《涅槃》約十二因緣明不定教。又復「我說初成道，十方菩薩已問此義」，即《涅槃》中約十二因緣有祕密教。所以者何？初為鈍根弟子說十二因緣生滅相，別有利根菩薩在座，密聞十二因緣不生滅相，即悟佛性，得無生忍，此祕密意也。此乃同居土中轉法輪相。

Furthermore, all Buddhas turn the Dharma wheel based on this contemplation. In the quiescent bodhimaṇḍa with its seven locations and eight assemblies, for bodhisattvas of sharp faculties they expounded the twelve links of dependent origination as neither arising nor ceasing, which is also called provisional designation and called the meaning of the middle way; in the Deer Park, for disciples of dull faculties they expounded the characteristics of the arising and ceasing of the twelve links of dependent origination; in the Vaipulya twelve classes of scriptures, they expounded the arising and ceasing of the twelve links of dependent origination as identical to emptiness, identical to the provisional, and identical to the middle; in the Mahāprajñāpāramitā, they expounded the twelve links of dependent origination as identical to emptiness, identical to the provisional, and identical to the middle; in the Lotus Sūtra, they expounded the twelve links of dependent origination as identical to the middle, setting aside the three expedient means; in the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra, they expounded the twelve links of dependent origination as fully endowed with the four meanings, all possessing the Buddha-nature, just as milk possesses the nature of ghee. The differences among the four teachings and five flavors are all skillful discriminations based on the twelve links of dependent origination, guiding beings according to their capacities. Furthermore, "placing poison in milk" is the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra clarifying the indeterminate teaching based on the twelve links of dependent origination. Again, "When I said that upon first attaining the Way, bodhisattvas of the ten directions had already questioned this meaning," this is the esoteric teaching based on the twelve links of dependent origination in the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra. Why is this? When first expounding the characteristics of the arising and ceasing of the twelve links of dependent origination for disciples of dull faculties, there were separately bodhisattvas of sharp faculties in the assembly who secretly heard the characteristics of the non-arising and non-ceasing of the twelve links of dependent origination, and thereupon awakened to the Buddha-nature and attained the forbearance of non-arising: this is the esoteric meaning. This is the aspect of turning the Dharma wheel in the realm of shared dwelling.
