Recognising stages [of practice]: the lightness or gravity of the three evil destinies is entirely brought about by the evil formations, unwholesome craving, and grasping of avidyā. The heights and depths of the three wholesome destinies are likewise brought about by the wholesome formations, non-agitating formations, craving, grasping, and becoming of avidyā. If one overturns avidyā, craving, and grasping, and gives rise to wisdom regarding arising and ceasing, these are the higher and lower ranks of practice among the worthy and noble ones liberated through wisdom in the Tripiṭaka [teaching]. If one transforms formations and becoming, and gives rise to the merits of contemplation, refinement, permeation, and cultivation of conduct, these are the higher and lower ranks of practice among the doubly liberated worthy and noble ones in the Tripiṭaka [teaching]. The minor and major kalas can be known by analogy with this. Overturning the five perfections into the prajñā of formations and becoming, and overturning avidyā, craving, and grasping to subdue the sense faculties, constitutes the stages of the three asaṃkhyeyas. If one overturns avidyā, craving, and grasping, and comprehends that they are immediately real; and overturns formations and becoming to cultivate the six perfections like planting trees in space, these are the higher and lower ranks of practice of the four patiences. Overturning avidyā, craving, and grasping gives rise to the wisdom of the aspects of the path; overturning formations and becoming accomplishes the cultivation of the perfections through kalpas, spiritual powers, purifying Buddha-lands, and maturing sentient beings, constituting the higher and lower ranks of practice of the six wheels. If overturning avidyā, craving, and grasping is itself the blazing lamp of the three bodhis, these are the higher and lower ranks of the six identities in the perfect teaching.
