If it is quiescent suchness, what stages could there be? The first bhūmi is itself the second bhūmi; bhūmis arise from suchness, yet suchness has no arising; or they cease from suchness, yet suchness has no cessation. All sentient beings are themselves the great nirvāṇa and cannot cease again—what stages of high or low, great or small, could there be? Non-arising and non-arising cannot be spoken of; yet due to causes and conditions, they can also be spoken of. The ten factors of dependent origination serve as causes for arising; just like painting on empty space or expediting the planting of trees, all stages are thus spoken of. If a person does not know the above stages and erroneously gives rise to attachment, generating excessive pride, they are a caṇḍāla among bodhisattvas.
