Patient acceptance: when contemplating the dependent origination of the ten realms, various dharmas obstructing the path will arise—namely, the three obstacles and the four māras, various adverse and favourable conditions. Dharmas such as karma, māra, dhyāna, the two vehicles, and the bodhisattva practices all arise from the two links of formations and becoming. If one can patiently accept them, one will accomplish the merits of the Tathāgata's formations and becoming—namely, the rewarded marks of the purification of the six sense faculties. The arising of the obstacle of defilements: greed, anger, false reckonings, deep and sharp views, arrogance, the two vehicles, and the wisdom practices of the bodhisattvas of the shared, distinctive, and Tripiṭaka teachings all arise from the links of avidyā, craving, and grasping. If one can comprehend and patiently accept them, one will open the Buddha's knowledge and vision. The arising of the obstacle of retribution: the various aggregates, realms, and entrances, the various eight winds, and various illnesses all arise from the seven links. If one knows they are themselves the Buddha-nature, unmoving and without grasping or rejecting, just like empty space, then without severing saṃsāra one enters nirvāṇa, and without destroying the aggregates and entrances one reveals the true dharmakāya. Being able to penetrate thus, one is unobstructed regarding the three obstacles. Abiding in the stage of patience, gentle, good, and compliant, without rashness or violence, the mind is also not startled—this is called the 'accomplishment of the patient mind'. Just as when a śrāvaka abides in the dharma of patience, they will never fall back into committing the five heinous deeds or becoming an icchantika; so when a bodhisattva abides in the stage of forbearance, they will never give rise to grave offenses obstructing the path.
