Furthermore, one contemplates that this dhyāna, as a dharma arisen from causes and conditions, is identical to emptiness, identical to the provisional, and identical to the middle: the ten dharmadhātus are born from dhyāna and cease from dhyāna. Why is this? If through dhyāna one gives rise to the dharmas of the three wretched paths and the six destinies, this increases the twenty-five states of existence, giving rise to six dharmadhātus and extinguishing four dharmadhātus. If through dhyāna one gives rise to dharmas such as the liberations, subduing the twenty-five states of existence, this also crushes and conceals the six dharmadhātus. If one contemplates the liberations and so forth as impermanent, this uses the clumsy deliverance of arising and ceasing to break through the twenty-five states of existence, extinguishing six dharmadhātus and giving rise to one dharmadhātu. If one contemplates that the dharmas arisen from causes and conditions in dhyāna are identical to emptiness, this uses the skillful deliverance of non-arising to break through the twenty-five states of existence, extinguishing seven dharmadhātus and giving rise to one dharmadhātu. If one contemplates dhyāna as identical to the provisional, this uses the clumsy deliverance of the immeasurable to break through the twenty-five states of existence and adventitious defilements, extinguishing eight dharmadhātus and giving rise to one dharmadhātu. If one contemplates that the dharmas arisen from causes and conditions in dhyāna are identical to the middle, this uses the skillful deliverance of the single reality to break through the twenty-five states of existence and the delusion of avidyā, extinguishing nine dharmadhātus and giving rise to one dharmadhātu. This accomplishes the king samādhi, which universally gathers all samādhis; the fundamental dhyānas and the liberations all enter into it, like rivers flowing into the sea; transforming the fundamental dhyānas and liberations, they all become the Mahāyāna. The meaning of gathering is like rivers entering the sea; the meaning of extinguishing is like fresh water being spent; the meaning of arising is like saltiness being accomplished. Dhyāna-pāramitā transforms that concentration of loving-kindness into objectless loving-kindness and compassion; transforms that buddha-mindfulness into the great ocean of buddha-mindfulness, where all the Buddhas of the ten directions appear before one; transforms those supernormal powers into the Tathāgata's uncalculated skillful means.
